- 2 cups dried navy beans
- 1 onion, diced
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 5 cups water
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 1/2 cup bacon, cooked and crumbled (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse the dried navy beans under cold water until clear. Soak them overnight in plenty of water.
- Combine the soaked beans, diced onion, brown sugar, ketchup, molasses, salt, pepper, mustard, and crumbled bacon (if using) in your crockpot.
- Add 5 cups of water, ensuring each bean is submerged.
- Stir the mixture to achieve an even distribution.
- Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours until the beans are soft and flavorful.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning before serving warm.
Notes
For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and consider using smoked paprika for flavor.
